Handyl
Handyl is a product that sanitizes both communal surfaces and the user’s own hands. This was my submission for the Bompas & Parr Fountain of Hygiene: Sanitizer Design Competition. The challenge was to design an enhanced sanitizer in response to COVID-19. My concept is intended to reduce the amount of waste generated by popular sanitizing products and is inspired by the hand soap sheets already on the market. This product has broad utility, including but not limited to subway cars, buses, supermarket trolleys, and railings. It can also be used domestically at a smaller scale to sanitize doorknobs and handles around the home.

FINAL CONCEPT
Handyl has two separate functions. First, Handyl can be squeezed, releasing sanitizer from the thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) layer. This material is flexible and durable, making it ideal for squeezing and manipulating. This layer provides sanitizer to the sponge layer that is directly in contact with the surface this product is wrapped around. Once squeezed, the user can utilize Handyl as a large wipe for the “communal” surface, moving the product up and down or side to side to sanitize the surface. The exterior material is Sharklet, an antibacterial surface, ideal for preventing attachment or growth of bacteria. Other antibacterial or antimicrobial surfaces can also be used instead. The transparency between the exterior and TPU layer allows for workers to see when the TPU pouch needs to be refilled.
The second function comes after using Handyl to sanitize the communal surface, when the user wants to sanitize their hands. Pushing the slider up triggers a water-soluble sanitizing pad to drop into the open compartment at the bottom. The user can then reach in and push the pad into the sponge base when removing it. This contact with the sponge introduces the pad to water, initiating the reaction of the pad dissolving into sanitizer as the user rubs their hands together.
